Normally I share a cookbook each month yet this time I must share with you a magazine my family dearly loves. My Dad was a huge fan and avid reader of “Taste of the South”, my Cookbook of the Month – April 2020 recommendation. No it’s not a cookbook but it should be in my opinion. If you enjoy and are looking for authentic Southern cuisine, this magazine is worth a look. The recipes are easy to follow and did I mention absolute deliciousness awaits.

So what makes this magazine so special? Well, let me start with recipes of epic proportions. Each bi-monthly issue brings all new recipes of just about anything you can think of. Southern desserts like cakes, banana pudding, and classics like fried chicken, tomato pie, and biscuits to cornbread exist in every issue. I’ve never made a recipe from the an issue that wasn’t delicious. So many of the recipes remind me of family cookouts and holiday meals when I was younger. The taste of those meals are never forgotten and live in my recipes today.

Taste of the South also brings to life food culture of the South in each issue. The May/June issue has a featured article about Leah Chase. Ms. Chase was a celebrated legendary chef, humanitarian, and the owner of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in New Orleans. Serving classic Creole dishes was her forte’ yet the cooking was not always done by her. Leah had a business vision of what the restaurant was meant to be and that was a gathering place where black people could meet besides in church. Her vision was feeding people, serving consistently delicious cuisine to anyone as the restaurant is known today. Click here to read more about Leah Chase and her restaurant.
