Cookbook of the Month – February 2020

My Mom would say “And this too shall pass” and I would wonder what it meant. As I got older I began to understand life throws you curve balls and you learn real quick that ups and downs are just part of living. Thanks Mom for helping me to understand and sharing your wisdom. So as I’m preparing for surgery in about a week and I realized I haven’t posted my Cookbook of the Month – February 2020 recommendation. In honor of Black History Month, flip through the pages of “Sweetie Pie’s Cookbook”.

Sweetie Pie’s Cookbook

Miss Robbie’s cookbook is filled Southern recipes with traditional recipes and some with updated twists yet they bring back so many memories of cooking with my Grandmothers. Watching them in the kitchen was such a treat and learning experience. Those tips and tricks I use today. Miss Robbie believes in moderation but wants to prepare the real thing without any substitutions. She does suggest on cutting down on sugar, fat and salt while not sacrificing flavor.

Celebrate History Month with Delicious Soul Food Recipes

In all Miss Robbie’s many years of cooking she says she listened to her gut and her own taste buds when creating her recipes. That’s how I learned to cook in my family of Southern cooks. I appreciate her way of thinking about food and its preparation. I agree with her when she says a recipe give you the tools to experiment and make a recipe your own.

Make These Recipes Your Own

I got this cookbook from my Dad when he passed away last year. You’ll see in the picture post-it tabs he placed on pages he loved. We would sit, talk about her recipes and Dad in turn would talk about foods made by my Granny. Boy, do I miss all the hours of talking about recipes or discussing another recipe you tried (tears…).

Brings Back Memories In My Granny’s Kitchen

Some of my favorite recipes are the Salmon Croquettes (page 12) which maybe the closest recipe to my Mom’s. Who doesn’t love a good chicken wing/ Try the Hot Honey Chicken Wings (page 24). Smothered Chicken (page 60) reminds me of Mom’s recipe, and a must try is Miss Robbie’s famous Mac and Cheese (page 109). This mac and cheese is ridiculously, insanely good. It’s perfect for a big gathering.

If you are a fan of soul food, take a looksy at this cookbook because you won’t be sorry. Sometimes old school is a must especially when serving family and friends. Enjoy my Cookbook of the Month – February 2020. Happy Cooking!
