My Cookbook of the Month – June 2017 is a book I found by accident. The cookbook is Bits on Sticks by John McLeay. As I flipped through the pages I realized it was filled with fabulous pictures of skewers and what better book to own when you love to barbecue. My Mom made barbecue all summer long growing up. As long as it wasn’t storming the grill was lit up and ready to go. Nothing is like the smell of barbecue; the aroma is killer.
Bits on Sticks reminded me of how much I love to do kabobs. It doesn’t matter whether they are beef, poultry, pork or seafood. Let’s not forget about vegetable kabobs as the perfect setting for cooking your meat and veggies together. Throwing different things on the grill is fabulous thing. Just grab great friends and some good cocktails, I’d say the party’s on.
Cookbook of the Month – June 2017
That’s what my Cookbook of the Month – June 2017 is all about. Many cookbooks don not allow you to envision cooking for special guests with lots of variety. John addresses being short on time and what to do to get your prep started early. Most meats can sit in the refrigerator overnight in marinade. Seafood is the only food that should wait until the day of cooking it, marinating an hour or so before. This way all to be done is the skewering and your guests will be so impressed.
Skewers or kabobs can be threaded with either wood, bamboo or metal. If you’re using bamboo or wood, soak them in water for at least one hour before grilling to keep from burning. I enjoy both kinds in different lengths but I really enjoy using my metal ones. It all depends on what I’m cooking and the plans for my party. That’s what makes Bits on Sticks so special. Because no matter if you’re in need of new recipes or go-to favorites, this book has it all. Enclosed in the book are also desserts and sauces. Everything you’ll need to create a menu based on everything cooked on skewers.

John will tell you don’t be afraid to experiment with the recipes in this cookbook as I know exactly what he’s talking about. Make the recipes your own and create what you like. I think you will enjoy this cookbook as much as I do. Some of my favorites are Lemongrass and Sesame Beef Skewers, Prawn (Shrimp) and Chorizo Skewers, Garlic and Chili Prawns (Shrimp) with Lime Aioli, Basil and Garlic Veg Sticks, and Corn and Green Onion Fritters. Check out Bits on Sticks here online and get your copy today. Definitely a delicious and fun cookbook to have if you love to grill or want to add a unique book to your library. As John would say, “Happy Skewering!”
