Cookbook of the Month – November 2016

Fall is the time of year we most often think of soup. So, welcome to my Cookbook of the Month – November 2016, Dairy Hollow House Soup & Bread: The Country Inn Cookbook by Crescent Dragonwagon. This cookbook is a must have in your book library for several reasons. But let’s talk about soup being a typical mainstay in most cultures around the world. Soup is considered a broth infused with flavor upon flavor. While hearty soups are considered entrees for lunch and dinner, soup can be served hot or cold as meal starters. Seems like our love of soup most often is accompanied by a bread, chips, and or a sandwich. Therefore, this cookbook is a must for your cookbook library.

First of all, reading about Crescent is sheer joy. While dealing with the trials and tribulations of running a country inn, her story is delightful and a fun read not to mention how she began writing cookbooks namely Soup & Bread. The cookbook is based on the recipes made at her country inn, Dairy Hollow House started over 20 years ago. You can read about her and her husband starting the inn, blazing a trail into the culinary world and the love of people, consequently has led to her success.

Crescent takes you on a journey through making stock, fillips which are added after cooking. What is a fillip? They are consequently meant to add pleasure to the palate, like sour cream compliments chili. Who knew, right? In addition, Cookbook of the Month – November 2016 addresses fine points like determining recipe yields while preparing for large parties. Maybe, you’re serving your soup as a starter instead of a main dish. Crescent answers all those questions.

Especially relevant, Soup & Bread contains chicken soups, bean soups, fish soups, gumbos, vegetable soups like my favorite, Greek Lentil and Spinach Soup with Lemon (page 208). Let’s not forget dairy soups, fruit soups and nut soups. Crescent creates a few recipes in each category to keep you interested and coming back to this cookbook time and time again.

Mrs. Dragonwagon has created her recipes to represent her gutsy, distinctive bowls of love that you’ll want to cook for your family over and over.
