Inspired by my Mom and my Granny, Southern cooking is in my blood. Watching both women prepare meals and desserts definitely is engraved in my style of cooking. Recipes like my Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy to Fried Chicken are in my DNA and that’s okay with me. Yet I have put new flavors to classics for an updated version. That’s why I love my Cookbook of the Month – September 2020 recommendation. It’s a favorite and one you should look at if you enjoy Southern recipes.

Field Peas to Foie Gras: Southern Recipes with a French Accent by Jennifer Hill Booker is a treasure. My Dad recommended I get this cookbook or at least take a look at it. Boy, am I glad I did. The author is a culinary instructor and chef trained at Le Cordon Bleu. Jennifer grew up in Mississippi yet celebrates the differences between the two cuisines and their similarities. She even shares her own personal food memories throughout the pages and provides straightforward instruction for every recipe in this cookbook.

When you flip through the pages of this cookbook, you’ll see recipes that will sound or contain foods we normally don’t eat. Trust me, I’m an adventurous eater yet I draw the line at some things. There is something for everyone in this book. Savory recipes containing turnips, okra, venison, rabbit, and many parts of the pig are here for you. Easy to follow and simple to make.

Some of my favorite recipes are Green Tomato Cha Cha (page 34) is so similar to a recipe my Mom used to make. It’s a delicious sweet tart relish served with barbecue, greens, and beans. How about Crookneck Squash and Onions (page 59), Great Northern Beans and Ham (page 70), Sweet Potato Muffins (page 90), Mackerel Croquettes (page 101), Oxtails and Rice (page 138), and desserts like Peach Cobbler (page 162). Drinks, cocktails, and homemade spirits can also be found in this cookbook.
