Do you have special meals or certain foods you save for Sunday dinners? When I was a kid Mom prepared our family favorite fried chicken and one of my favorites, Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy. She always made a big pan of her creamy mashed potatoes to go along with. Believe me, her Sunday dinners were something to die for and you couldn’t wait until church was over.
The cubed steak was super tender, and the onion gravy was so simple yet seasoned just right to go over those mashed potatoes. Sometimes Mom would serve greens, green beans or Dad’s favorite black eyed peas.
Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy
Mom would always use round steak to make her cubed steak, however your grocery store may have cubed steak ready to be seasoned, floured and cooked. No hassle of pounding out the steak and making a bunch of noise. as a kid helping Mom, I loved the pounding (laugh). It was a kid thing.
Anyway, pounding is what tenderizing the meat and makes it mouth-watering tender. I use Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Flour as my dredge as salt and pepper is mixed in. You can use regular flour and add seasoning as desired.

In preparing this dish, once meat is dredged in flour, brown meat on both sides in a oil and butter. Remove to plate and brown in batches if necessary. Add meat back to skillet and slice a large onion, adding to skillet.
Pour in beef broth and other seasonings, cover and low simmer for about 1 hour or until meat is tender and gravy has thickened. Gravy may not be thick enough, so make a slurry with a bit of cornstarch and water. Don’t add too much because the gravy will be too thick.

While the cubed steak is cooking, prepare mashed potatoes and a vegetable. Your meal is now complete. This is still one of my favorite meals anytime of the year especially on a rainy day. I just call it comfort food even for simple ingredients.
Does your family enjoy mushrooms? Add them to this recipe for even more flavor. What a great combination with the onions. This recipe makes you a believer that a few ingredients can make a star-studded meal that never gets old. It’s definitely a meal to bring a smile to your face.
Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy
Cubed Steak with Onion Gravy
2 pounds beef cubed steak, 6 pieces
3/4 cup Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Flour
2 to 3 T. Olive oil (half butter and half oil can be used)
2 cups beef stock, warmed
1 T. umami powder, optional (adds mushroom flavor)
2 garlic cloves, finely minced
1 T. tomato paste
1 large yellow onion, sliced
Salt and black pepper to taste
Heat a 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge cubed steaks in seasoned flour. Place meat in heated oil and sear on both sides until nicely browned, about 2 minutes per side. Sear in 2 batches so the meat browns.
Add steaks back to skillet and pour in beef stock and lower heat to simmer. Stir in garlic, tomato paste and top meat with sliced onion, immersing in stock. Sprinkle with black pepper to taste.
Cover and simmer for 1 hour or until meat is tender and gravy has thickened. If gravy becomes too thick, add in more stock to thin. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Serve cubed steak over creamy mashed potatoes smothered in onion gravy.
Makes 3 to 4 servings.
