Okay, here’s the story: Several years ago I was given a sample of pure vanilla extract. I feel in love with Heilala Vanilla – May Featured Ingredient for two major reasons. First is taste because it’s pure and the second because of how this vanilla is produced. The whole world cooks and bakes with vanilla not to mention an essential kitchen staple. No kitchen should be without the best pure vanilla afforded. Vanilla extract can be kind of pricey these days.

So I will make the story of Heilala Vanilla rather short and link their website here in this post. Heilala brand was started in 2002 in Tonga, South Pacific as an aid project. In 2004, the first crop of bourbon beans were harvested and sold. One fabulous bourbon vanilla was born with its sweet, creamy rich flavor.
As popularity grew, The Heilala Vanilla Foundation was started to aid in continual sustainability efforts in Tonga. Instilled was a sense of pride, independence, economic growth, and a healthy partnership. The Foundation is a charitable trust in New Zealand continuing to do good for the many.

The paste has won multiple awards and made with both bean seeds and extract. Vanilla Bean Paste is used in the same manner as extract and great when highlighting the seeds in light-colored desserts. Read more here to learn the history of vanilla and become as intrigued as I did. I personally work for a company where sustainability is 100% part of everything we do and each employee plays a huge part.
Buying pure vanilla is a must so stay away from artificial flavored extracts which are cheaper in price yet taste nothing like the real thing. Most often artificial vanilla is used mainstream but the real thing is used by baking professionals. I have an arsenal of vanilla and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Try the “real real” and see what I mean by visiting the Heilala website. Happy Baking!
