Ever have a craving for a Cheese Steak sandwich? How you ever tried making them at home? Well, I’ve got an easy fix for your craving and a quick weeknight meal to boot. Try my Homemade Cheese Steak Sandwiches. One of my favorite restaurants back home in Ohio, Penn Station (click here) has one of the best cheese steak sandwiches outside of Pat’s in Philly. When I moved to Chicago, I could not find a place that had a sandwich like I remembered eating. So I decided to create my own recipe. My Homemade Cheese Steak Sandwiches are made with soft, toasted Italian sub rolls, thinly sliced sirloin steak, onions, mushrooms, and provolone cheese. Serve these sandwiches with homemade french fries. Yum-O! Give the sandwich a try. These sandwiches are not just for adults; kids like them, too. Share your ideas for your own Homemade Cheese Steak Sandwiches. I’m happy to report I now have a Penn Station not far from my home. Still like my recipe…Enjoy!
Homemade Cheese Steak Sandwiches
Homemade Cheese Steak Sandwiches
½ to ¾ pounds Beef sirloin tip sandwich steak, cut into strips
1 small onion, thinly sliced
10 white button mushrooms, sliced
Sub rolls
Provolone cheese slices
Mayonnaise
Butter
Heat a 12 inch skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 T. butter. Place steak strips in skillet and sauté until browned and tender, about 10 minutes. Do not crowd skillet as this will prevent steak from browning. Sauté in batches and add more butter as needed. Remove steak to large plate; set aside.
In same skillet, add 1 T. butter, sliced onion and mushrooms until onions are soft and mushrooms begin to brown, 10-15 minutes. Return steak to skillet with onion and mushrooms, stir and divide meat into sandwich portions; top with provolone cheese and cover to melt cheese.
Meanwhile, split and butter sub rolls; place rolls on broiler pan and toast until brown. Remove from oven.
To assemble sandwiches: Add mayonnaise to rolls, top with steak, onions, mushrooms, and cheese. Serve with homemade French fries.
Note: You can use mozzarella cheese or other great melting cheese, add green or red peppers to the sauté if you like. Better yet, create your own version of my cheese steak sandwiches.
