During these dog days of Summer, I enjoy eating salads of all kinds, don’t you? Just something about cool, crisp vegetables and your favorite lettuces. However, crisp coleslaw is a big easy for potlucks, picnics, and family night dinner. I thought about my Mom’s Coleslaw with Homemade Dressing. What makes this coleslaw so special is the dressing. Sweet and tart, creamy goodness with a bit of nostalgia behind it. This dressing is near and dear to my heart.
Mom’s Coleslaw with Homemade Dressing
I was a kid when I first tasted this dressing. I remember my Grandmother making something similar but it was Mom who would make this dressing one to remember. Mom’s stamp is all in the taste of 4 distinct ingredients. So, as I was trying to create her masterpiece since no one ever used a recipe, I had to rely on taste.
When I was a kid, Kraft Miracle Whip was used instead of mayonnaise so I knew this was one ingredient for sure. The second was apple cider vinegar and yellow mustard for the perfect tang. Next sugar is added for sweetness plus celery seed for appearance and the hint of celery taste. Celery seed is optional as sometimes I don’t use it either.

Mom would also use this dressing for regular dinner salads as well. Now days, I have other favorite dressings and prefer a less sweet dressing for lettuce salads. However, Mom’s recipe is a perfect accent to pasta salads and coleslaw or where a sweeter dressing is needed. Did I mention this dressing makes a great dip for chicken fingers? Try it and your kids will love it.
