Over my years, I’ve learned there is a difference and have a deeper understanding how each should be used. Butter is a creamy dreamy smooth substance that no other ingredient can match.

So, the main difference is salted butter has salt added and unsalted butter has no salt. Bet you thought I was going to shock you with some unknown ingredient, right? Salt added or not is the only variable at work here. Both can be used interchangeably in your recipes. Yet, if a recipe notes salted or unsalted butter is used that means one or the other was used when the recipe was created. If you notice all my posted recipes will tell you which is used as a result I find this helpful for all.

Since butter is all about flavor using unsalted butter gives you complete control over added salt in your recipe. If too much salt is used there is no way of getting rid of it. Unsalted butter allows you to judge how much salt is enough without lessening the flavor of butter. Unsalted butter tastes like pure sweet cream. Salted butter is good in compound butters, mashed potatoes, grilled or steamed vegetables, and hot breakfast cereals like my favorite oatmeal. Finally the moral of the story is follow these guidelines and you can’t go wrong. Just remember salt or no salt gives you ultimate control of the flavor in your recipe.
