“Simple Spicy Guacamole”

Who doesn’t love a good guacamole? If you enjoy avocados and foods with a hint of heat, then my Simple Spicy Guacamole is a perfect fit for game day. This recipe was inspired by a version from a favorite restaurant.

I’ve learned over the years to create some of my favorite eats just by taste. Not everything comes out as good as my guacamole. I’m still working on those and will post when ready.

Homemade Guacamole is always the star of the show

In the meantime, for avocado lovers I bring you a simple recipe that can be modified to increase servings. Avocados are abundant right now and looking good by my accounts. Not to ripe and perfect for use the same or next day. I will say as much as I love these babies, they are not as kind to me. I tend to be allergic especially during the summer months. Who knows yet I sneak them in wherever and whenever I can.

Avocados you know are a good source of protein and fiber. So, when you add in other healthy ingredients, what gets better than that? I call that a happy healthy snack. It’s the add-ons that get you into trouble. And yes, tortilla chips are a must.

This recipe serves 2-3 but easily adjust servings for amount needed

When making guacamole, you must start with fresh ingredients including good avocados. Buy avocados that when pressed with your thumb make a slight dent but not mushy. If they are overly green, purchase them and place in a paper bag to help ripen. Use them in a couple days.

Here’s a little tip to keep your avocado from going dark. I add 1 Tablespoon of lime juice to the bowl I will be mixing the guacamole in. Place your avocado in bowl and smash immediately. This allows very little time for the avocado to be exposed to air without acid (citrus). I also suggest having all your ingredients prepared for speedy prep.

Grab those tortilla chips

All guacamoles are not created equal. No matter homemade, restaurant, or store-bought, no two ever taste the same. I definitely don’t do store-bought plus homemade fts your own tastebuds.

That said, let’s get to the mix-ins. Starting with red onion but you can use white onion instead. Next comes seeded and chopped plum tomato and cilantro. I know cilantro is the herb everyone loves to hate. You either love it or hate it so modify should you need to.

The use of Serrano peppers can also be adjusted to your taste yet essential to this recipe. Be sure to remove seeds and membrane to reduce heat level. I use one with and one without seeds. Jalapenos can be used as they are a bit milder. Last comes, chopped garlic, ground cumin, freshly ground black pepper, red pepper flakes and sea salt to taste.

Soooo addicting!!!

Not you have a new recipe worthy of serving friends, family or just for yourself. You can serve this simple guacamole at room temperature or chilled slightly which I prefer. Once refrigerated, this recipe will last about two days. Be sure to place plastic wrap pressed down on surface to keep air out.

If you like variation, add chopped green onions and crumbled bacon for a new twist. Just be sure to have plenty of tortilla chips on hand. Lightly salted, please? If you make this recipe, #chowdownlodown, @michelleheyden or message me below. Enjoy!

Simple Spicy Guacamole

1 large ripe avocado

1 T. fresh lime juice, to taste

1 medium plum tomato, seeded and chopped

1/4 cup chopped red onion

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 to 2 Serrano peppers, seeded and minced, to taste

3 T. chopped fresh cilantro, to taste

1/2 t. ground cumin

1/2 t. fine sea salt, to taste

1/4 t. freshly ground black pepper

1/4 t. red pepper flakes

Tortilla chips, for serving

In a medium mixing bowl, add in lime juice and seeded avocado. Mash with fork until desired texture is achieved.

Stir in remaining ingredients excluding chips. Adjust lime juice, salt and pepper to taste if needed.

Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve. Be sure to place plastic wrap flat on surface to remove any air and keep guacamole from turning brown.

Makes 2-3 servings but recipe can easily be increased to serve more.
