“Stromboli with Homemade Pizza Sauce”

Do you remember Jeno’s pizza rolls as a kid? My sister was addicted to those little puffs and were a Saturday treat she couldn’t wait to eat. Not my favorite snack yet we would share. However, as we got older, we graduated to pizza puffs and hot pockets. Needless to say, since we’re all ordered to stay at home bringing out some oldie but goody, tried and true recipes are in order. Put Stromboli with Homemade Pizza Sauce on tonight’s menu. Your kids will thank you because they can and use all their favorite fillings.

Load Her Up with Extra Sauce

If you’ve never made your own Stromboli before, it’s super easy and fun for the whole family. Everyone can use whatever fillings as you would on pizza. Use pepperoni instead of sausage, sauteed onions and peppers, black olives, ham, or spinach. One thing I recommend is to not fill the dough too full because too much filling will make the dough soggy. Yet, do what you like and use my recipe as a guide. Remember cheese is your friend. Yummers!

A Meal Full of Family Fun and Good Eats

Now that you’ve got the fillings on the crust, roll into a log on parchment paper and tuck in the ends. The stromboli only bakes for about 20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and let rest 5 minutes before slices as desired. Serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping. Kids will love this handheld meal with something to dip in. I love tried and true recipes and and you will, too. Stay safe…It’s gonna be alright.

2 packages Wewalka refrigerated thin crust pizza crust

Store-bought or homemade pizza sauce (recipe follows)

1-pound cooked Italian sausage, crumbled, divided

8 oz. package Baby Bella mushrooms, sliced and cooked, divided

2 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Pizza sauce:

1 – 6 oz. can Hunts tomato paste

1 – 15 oz. can Hunts tomato sauce

1 t. granulated sugar

1 t. Italian seasoning

1/2 t. dried oregano

1/2 t. garlic powder

1/2 t. onion powder

1/2 t. kosher salt or to taste

1/4 t. ground black pepper or to taste

To make pizza sauce, in a medium bowl, whisk together tomato paste and tomato sauce until smooth. Add in sugar, Italian seasoning, oregano, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper to taste and mix well.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Unroll pizza crust onto to parchment paper on baking sheet and stretch into square shape as much as possible without tearing crust.

Top crust with 1/3 cup pizza sauce. Spread about 1 cup sausage evenly over sauce then top with half of mushrooms and 1 1/4 cups mozzarella cheese. Prepare remaining stromboli.

Using parchment paper to assist, roll Stromboli into a log. Place in middle of paper and cut 4 – 5 slits in top of dough.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow Stromboli to rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Slice as desired and serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping.

Makes 2 Stromboli with extra sauce.
